| Since the year 2000, artist Roger Baker has created 5 of the most amazing portraits in a field in upstate NY. They are called “The World’s Largest Portraits” and each one is a masterpiece of an icon we’we have come to know. The portraits Roger has created are, The Statue of Liberty, Albert Einstein, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix and in 2005 “Indian Larry”, the legendary chopper builder who tragically passed away in August of 2004. They are legends in their own particular fields. Filmmaker Gary Planken began documenting Rogers work a few years ago. The fields are yearly events that have been covered in magazines, newspapers and newscasts world-wide. They range in size from ½ million sq ft. up to almost 2 million sq ft. Each year the icon that Roger decides to create becomes a story that takes on a life of its own and last year the Indian Larry Documentary was something special. These still images were taken on the event day which brought Larry’s friends and family to the field to honor him. They are all photographed by A M Puopolo beside the filmmaker Gary Planken as he documented the entire event from a helicopter hovering around the ½ million sq ft. Portrait. | In less than a decade, Roger Baker, the internationally acclaimed field artist, has established himself as a major force in field portraiture. Born and raised in New Jersey and a resident of Cragsmoor, New York, since 1995, he began honing his craft as a painter, working in various media in the United States and abroad before specializing in field art. His field portraits have been featured on CNN and NBC's Today Show and in The New York Times. Located at the crossroads of social commentary and art, his field portraits intersect with American history, science, music, and cultural icons. He approaches each field canvas based on a high personal connection to the subject, moving quickly from original idea and conceptualizing the entire field-cutting experience-it is more than merely, "mowing the lawn"- to designing the portrait, mapping out the field, cutting and unveiling through aerial flyovers and terrestrial walkovers. ~Information provided by County of Orange Purple Heart Field Art project Opening Ceremony, 2007 |
